On Saturday 13th June, Raise the Colours Sheffield (RtCS) intends to march from The Peace Gardens to refugee accommodation on Blonk Street.
This blatant attempt to scapegoat migrants for all of society’s problems is just the latest escalation in a coordinated campaign to intimidate and divide, nationally and here in Sheffield. We will not let this racist fear-mongering go unopposed.
Sheffield Communities Against Racism & Fascism, alongside a coalition of other groups and local residents, have pledged to block this hate march because we do not believe that South Yorkshire Police (SYP) nor the local authority have either the means or inclination to do so. This march has no mandate and does not speak for the vast majority of Sheffield. Many of the organisers have never lived in our city, and half of them can’t even spell it.
South Sheffield Antifascists (SSAF) will be meeting 10.30am St Mary’s Church S2 4QZ. Walkley Antifascists (WAF) will be meeting in Walkley (exact location TBA) at 10am. WAF, SSAF, Hillsborough for All, and others will then head into the city centre. Stand Up to Racism Sheffield will gather in Tudor Square from 11am. Other antifascists will be arriving at Sheffield Town Hall at 11.30am.
RtCS intends to occupy Sheffield Peace Gardens S1 2HH from 12pm, and hopes to march down Fargate to Blonk St around 1.30pm.
Ultimately it is up to SYP how much taxpayer money is wasted facilitating and protecting a hostile march through the centre of our city, but the more people who make their opposition clear, the less likely it is to go ahead.
The situation will be fluid as we will need to react to RtCS and SYP tactics and actions, but we believe there are roles for everyone in resisting this march, regardless of their experience or physical capabilities. We can’t guarantee anyone’s safety, but we strive to look after each other and urge others to do the same. The best way to stop the march is for everyone who is able to physically oppose it to do so. However there is also likely to be a static counter-demonstration for most of the day.
We can’t be sure how long we’ll be on the streets, so prepare accordingly. Bring snacks and water, if you bring a phone make sure it’s charged and doesn’t have anything incriminating on it, dress appropriately, and bring a book or something to pass the time.
